For decades the medical community has either ignored, or been ignorant of, the threat posed by toxic mold to human health. Sometimes referred to as 'sick-building syndrome,' often mis-diagnosed as any one of a number of chronic and incurable conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, depression, learning disabilities, or endometriosis, the effects of mold form neurotoxins on human beings have long been poorly understood and thought unworthy of serious study.
But this same toxic mold infests our homes and buildings at an alarming, perhaps even epidemic, rate -- and so many of the 'untreatable' conditions that physicians are ill-equipped to diagnose and treat are the result of the neurotoxins released by these ubiquitous organisms. Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker has been the leader in the field of research into the effects of toxic mold on the human body, with hundreds of success stories in the treatment -- and even complete eradication -- of the chronic conditions that have been puzzling so many doctors the world over.
In Surviving Mold, Dr. Shoemaker shares his latest findings and offers hope to those who have been continually let down by the medical community. Containing Dr. Shoemaker's cutting-edge research into the effects of chronic neurotoxins, Surviving Mold also exams in-depth the root causes of the growth of dangerous mold forms in buildings and homes.
Inadequate maintenance, poorly thought-out design, and failure to understand the relationship between the internal environment and the promotion of harmful organisms are at the root of the problem of sick-building syndrome. Water damage and internal moisture from incorrectly installed roofs and windows or leaking plumbing, are all-too frequently the cause of the growth of toxic mold. And if these problems do not occur in your home, perhaps they can be found in your place of work, or in your child's school -- environments completely out of your control, but dangerous to the health of you and your loved ones nonetheless.
Surviving Mold gives the real science behind the scary headlines, and offers strategies for identifying and rectifying the dangers of indoor toxic mold growth, as well as suggestions for alleviating the debilitating effects of exposure to the chronic neurotoxins produced by mold.

If you are someone who is struggling with mold illness, the last thing you want is to read a heavy almost 800 page book on it. I was so surprised when I received this book at how THICK it is. But I thought that meant it was chocked full of information. It may be but this book is terribly unorganized. And there is no index. Part of having mold illness, your cognitive function can be, well, not so great at functioning and trying to navigate this book is so so tedious and overwhelming. I wish it had clear instructions on what to do. Like a here it is step by step. Oh you are on the cleaning part? Great, here is all that info in one place worded in what we suggest is the best method. Instead there is a chapter written by a different guy about how he uses different remediation/cleaning methods and how some are good, and some are not so good, but then later say it was good, and that other one that was good is actually bad. And some of these methods are really not possible for a residential place. There is a tiny section about using cleaners. And another section somewhere for a FAQ about vacuuming then swifer wiping, then vacuuming again. Seriously, my brain can't take it. I was hoping this would give me clearer information than the website, which is also very unorganized, but alas. This is really good information to know, about mold, biotoxin illness, etc. Finding out about the biotoxin illness has been a HUGE game changer for me in my progress to getting better from being chronically ill for most of my life. I just wish Dr. Shoemaker or someone in his team could make this information easier to digest, ESPECIALLY for the exact type of people he is targeting who need a little extra clear cut organization of the information.
If you are trying to get a good overview of what all this "surviving mold" stuff is, I'd highly recommend listening to podcasts that Dr. Shoemaker is in. Those have been really helpful and informative.

Surviving Mold Life in th Era of Dangerous Buildings edition by Ritchie Shoemaker Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
This book can at times be a challenging read because of the technical detail but it is worth the effort if you or someone you know is effected by mold or lymes. The often dizzying array of symptoms often leads to a misdiagnosis, not because they don't exist, because physicians and unaffected people assume they can't all be present. They can and often are!
The main body of the book is written by Ritchie Shoemaker with a compilation of people writing supporting chapters. The more I interact with worker's comp, OSHA , NIOSH the more I can confirm his perspective. He is an activist doctor in a corporate world that chooses to deny the health effects of mold and water damaged buildings. I found it the most well rounded book with both medical and legal arguments which I can use in my worker's comp case.
I have to agree with other reviewers, that Dr. Shoemaker is long on presenting the struggle he and patients have had in getting the "establishment" to recognize this very real illness, and short on a practical guide for patients to keep their practitioners informed and on target regarding the details of patient care. I was hoping for the latter.
This is a follow-up to Dr.Shoemaker's classic Mold Warriors, written several years prior to this. This book is an essential update, as he reveals several critical findings unknown at the time of the first book. My only problem is the info is spread out all over the book, & it doesn't have an index, which it desperately needs. Anyone who has ever been sickened by mold or 'Sick Building Syndrome' needs this book.
Suffering from a mold infection I was desperate to find a mold/fungi medical expert in the DC metro area. After hours of searching with no luck, I purchased "Surviving Mold". The author uses real life examples to give the reader the information he/she needs to know to positively rid yourself of this terrible illness. Surviving Mold outlines what happens to you, causing all your symptoms and making you sick. These bio toxins can be removed from your body. All medications in the various steps to wellness uses an FDA approved medicine and the first medicine was prescribed to me by an excellent ENT who specialize
in immunology. I'm just starting my third day on this medication and I already feel better. I have trouble putting my relief into words other than I am very grateful.
So you know, There is a lot of medical jargon in the book, which when I first read it I was overwhelmed. However, I believe the author did this on purpose because as you continue to read the book you learn the jargon and meaning. You need to know the jargon and treatment steps when you search for a competent physician to accurately and adequately express your medical needs to the physician.
Another important point is visiting the surviving mold website (survivingmold.com) where you will find more information and if you become a member you can take a test to determine if you test positive for Chronic Inflamatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) caused by the mold among other things. Take this learned information and the symptom checklist to your doctor. In addition to the testing you are able to ask the author, Dr. Shoemaker, questions and you will have access to 7 volumes of these answered questions which I find very helpful.
Bottom line is, I was lost when I first tested positive to a particular mold in my body and found that most doctors misdiagnose the significant symptoms. With the Surviving Mold information You will be prepared to nicely inform them what you know and the successful treatment plan. I sincerely hope you all get well from this harmful and debilitating illness.
I was looking for a book with information about healing from mold biotoxins. This book seemed to me like a lot of ranting and raving against the mainstream medical system, and the denial of the harmfulness of moldy buildings as well as how to navigate the system if you have mold illness from buildings you work in, go to school in or live in. Lots of stories about people's experiences. If you want that kind of info, the book has a lot. Wasn't what I was looking for.
